Mmm...homemade hors d'oeuvres!

Hors d'oeuvres can be a hit or flop when you have company coming. For most of us, we simply buy hors d'oeuvres to save time and effort. But I have the easiest recipe ever, so that you can make your own hors d'oeuvres with little time and effort.

With the holidays coming, check out this delicious and even nutritious alternative to buying pricey hors d'oeuvres and its even vegetarian, although you could add meat if you wish.

What You Need

Time needed: 1/2 hour

Cooking time: 35 minutes

Ingredients needed: pastry (flour, egg, vinegar, butter, margarine or lard), cheese, mushrooms, chick peas, onions, garlic, ceaser vinaigrette dressing(to be calorie wise) or regular creamy ceaser dressing

Recipe for Stephanie's Homemade Hor d'oeuvers

To make this recipe you will need to make or buy yourself some pastry dough. Once you have it, set it aside so that you can begin making the filling for these little delights of heaven.

  • 1 cup of chickpeas
  • 1 cup of mushrooms
  • 1 1/2 cups of any type of cheese (I use Mozzarella)
  • 1 onion
  • 2 tbsp of garlic
  • 3 tbsp of dressing

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees celcius.

Take a cup of chick peas and mash them up into a paste. Add some finely chopped mushrooms, onion and garlic. Add any seasoning you wish, such as salt or pepper and then add the dressing. Mix up this mixture in a bowl.

Now you can roll out the dough. After you have rolled it out nice and thin, take a cup and cut yourself some round pieces of pastry by pressing the open area of the cup into the pastry. Add half a slice of cheese in the middle of the circled pastry and then place the mixture on top and fold the round piece in half and press together. It may look similar to a pierogi. Set them on top of a cookie sheet, to save time you can cover your cookie sheet with tin foil and then take the foil off once you have finished baking the hor d'oeuvers.

Bake for 35 minutes.

The Benefits

There are many benefits to making your own hors d'oeuvres. When you make your own baked and cooked goods you always know exactly what goes into your recipes. If you are a person that monitors their weight or diet you can add more of one ingredient and omit another. There are no preservatives or additives or other unknown chemicals in your own baked or cooked foods as well. Another big benefit is the cost savings that comes with baking or cooking your own foods.

These pastries have would be great for a vegetarian because they have a high amount of protein in them with the chickpeas and cheese. The reason I made this recipe to begin with is because I have a 16 year old daughter that is a vegetarian and I always worry that she isn't getting enough nutrients. These morsels are filling and yummy, try them and let me know what you think!
